Shock dosing is an essential part of your initial hot tub setup to ensure your Lay-Z-Spa water is safe from day one. Shock dosing involves adding a larger quantity of chlorine to kill off bacteria, remove contamination and restore water clarity. This guide will show you how to handle that first big chemical hit with confidence for a clean, safe soak.
When Do You Need To Shock Your Hot Tub Water?
Your Lay-Z-Spa hot tub water should be shocked when:
- You first fill up your Lay-Z-Spa
- At the first signs of algae or slime
- After periods of heavy usage
- After a loss of water clarity or quality
- After refilling with fresh water
How Often Should You Shock Your Hot Tub Water?
You should shock dose your hot tub water with ClearWater Chlorine Granules after a period of high usage. This will help correct the sanitiser level, stop the growth of germs and keep the water clear and sparkling. After treatment, the quality and clarity of the water are usually fully restored
Steps To Shock Dose A Hot Tub
1. Make sure that your spa is filled with water to the appropriate level
2. Turn on the Water Filtration System, but make sure that the massage system is switched off
3. Check how much water your hot tub holds. The size of your hot tub affects how much chlorine you need. Mix the chlorine with warm water in a jug, then pour it into your hot tub while the filter is on
4. After you shock your Lay-Z-Spa water, wait at least 24 hours before checking the chlorine level. You can start using your Lay-Z-Spa when the chlorine level is 5 ppm or less (3-5 ppm is ideal), but you must finish step 5 first
5. If needed, balance your total alkalinity and pH levels
What You Should Do After Shock Dosing Your Lay-Z-Spa?
After a shock dose, it’s important to keep checking the chemical levels in your hot tub to ensure the chlorine is at the right level. We recommend using a ClearWater Dip Test Strip to measure the chlorine, alkalinity and pH levels in your hot tub
