Gardening Essentials for Autumn
With Summertime now behind us, Autumn is officially here. Bust out the woollen hat and scarf and stay in a warm bed at night! The colder weather of the season also brings the changing colours of Autumn. This change of weather means it’s time to get your garden ready to prepare for what mother nature will throw at it! Many gardening jobs can be done throughout the autumn months to ensure it stays looking its absolute best!
How can I ensure my garden stays in top condition throughout the Autumn months?

1. Rake away the falling leaves.
One of the most notable differences in autumn is the leaves falling out of the trees and turning golden. However, these can make your garden extremely messy looking, so making sure they are raked into a neat pile and thrown into a compost bin will ensure your vibrant green grass can still be seen!
2. Remove weeds in the patio.
The damper weather is likely to result in weeds starting to form in the gaps between the bricks in your beautiful patio. Use a Patio Weed Knife to clear away all those hard-to-reach weeds from tight grooves!
3. Aerate your lawn
It’s vitally important that your lawn has a constant flow of nutrients, water and oxygen to the grass roots. You can do this by simply pushing the pitchfork in about 4-5 inches deep into the grass and under soil and pull back slightly. Repeat this process every 6 – 10 inches across the garden. You can leave the holes that have formed as they are or alternatively you can fill them back in.

4. Prep the Soil
Dig into the soil to a depth of about 25 – 30cm and remove any stones, weeds or dead foliage. Spread about 15 – 20cm of compost on top and mix in, and level it out with a rake. This ensures the soil is in the best possible condition for plant growth.
5. Start Planting Autumn Vegetables
Vegetables like spinach, radish, lettuce and other greens tolerate the cooler weather and light frost that Autumn throws at us.
6. Clear away dead heads and branches
Prune and remove dead heads and branches from flowers, shrubs and trees. They blossom late into Autumn. Monitor them to ensure they can keep their vibrantcy!
7. Brighten up your outdoor area
Many flowers flourish during Autumn, such as Dahlias, Camellia, Hibiscus, Double Perennials, and Chrysanthemums. Get the hand trowel out and start planting!
