Everyone should declutter their home at least once a year. Research suggests that decluttering our homes can help our mental health by allowing us to focus on what's essential and relax, leading to reduced stress and anxiety levels. A recent survey conducted by APDO of homeowners showed that 44% of us experience 'mess-stress' at least weekly, and 72% of 'naturally tidy' people have experienced stress from an untidy home over the pandemic.

  1. Allocate decluttering time, set yourself achievable goals to declutter certain drawers and cabinets. It can be as simple as setting aside 10/15 minutes to declutter a 'junk drawer'. 
  2. Decluttering can be a time-consuming task, so prep yourself with a plan before you start and stick to it.
  3. While decluttering, there are some questions you can ask yourself to help with the process.

Ask yourself if it's "the best, the favourite, or necessary" – this can help narrow down your over-loading possessions.

For example, an overly large collection of casserole dishes can be narrowed down.

4. Once you have determined what items that you no longer need. You can separate them into 'Donate', 'Sell' and 'Rubbish'. 

REMEMBER – be realistic about what you want to sell; will it offer a decent return? Are you willing to invest the energy and time into selling these items? Don't have bags of clutter dotted around your house – be ruthless! 

SHOP for storage to organise what you keep. This varies depending on what you need to store from jarsboxes, and vacuum bags. Decluttering is critical; you can assess your storage needs when this is done.
